Maddie: it’s no trouble sweetie, you tried your best
Jack: besides these guys are nothing compared to ghosts
*cue Danny and Jazz making shut up gestures that go ignored*
Nightwing: Ghosts?
*cue Jack and Maddie dragging Nightwing into Fentonworks to blather on about ghosts leaving Danny, Jazz and Red Hood to finish cleaning up the rogues*
Red Hood *awkwardly*: so … I wanted to get you a gift basket for, you know, killing the Joker
Danny: … yes?
Red Hood: do you have any allergies? I would hate for you to die because I have you a muffin basket with banana nut muffins in it.
Danny: ….
Jazz: Danny’s only allergic to a specific strain of flowers that is probably extinct. He hates toast. Loves Humpty Dumpty, exploration and space.
Danny: Jazz really?
Jazz: also my parents may be right about ghost biology and anti ghost technology but they suck at ghost psychology. It took us forever just to convince them that ghosts couldn’t simultaneously be non-sentient and inherently malicious.
Danny: Al least we got mom and dad to listen to reason, the government still want to dissect my dog just because he’s dead.
Red Hood: wait the government wants to dissect your dead dog?
Danny: no they want to dissect my dog because he’s dead as in he’s a ghost
Red Hood: why would the government want to dissect a ghost dog?
Jazz: probably for the same reason they want to dissect a ghost person
Red Hood: the government wants to dissect ghost people?
Danny: yeah they are a real problem
Jazz: especially because they cause more damage trying to catch ghosts than the ghost causing mischief
Red Hood: wait Deadman’s a ghost and no one can see him without magic, is there a magical ghost hunting branch of government?
Danny: who’s Deadman?
Red Hood: the JL hero whose a ghost
Danny: wait the JL has a ghost hero and they haven’t turned him over to the GIW
Red Hood: who are the GIW?
Jazz: why don’t we all go inside and talk, it seems we all need answers and I don’t think doing this in front of semi conscious mercenaries is a good idea.
Danny: plus we should probably save Nightwing from mom and dad
Okay hear me out..
Class trip to Gotham, class gets held up by Joker who actually can scare the class cause they are still teens and they know Joker has a high kill rate, like yes they're used to ghosts and junk but none of them wanna die yet or at least die outside of Amity, if they die they wanna have a chance of coming back as a ghost at the very least.
Anyways, Danny feels pure dread when Joker takes Jazz hostage, who was elected to be a chaperone for Danny's class since her volunteering would look good on college recommendations, and finds her little mutters about his mental health reminding him of Harley before she left him. He even jokes about needing a new partner and wonders how long it'll take to break her like he did to Harley.
Danny is frozen in his spot but something snaps when he hears Jazz cry out after Joker backhands her. Before anyone, even the Bats, realize it Danny is on top of the Joker beating his face in, he only gets up once, takes Joker's discarded crowbar and slams it over his head, barely grazing the dazed man but it does destroy the flooring behind him, while screaming to never ever touch his sister. That he will destroy Joker if he even thinks about coming after her. That even in the afterlife he'll never be safe from him.
All this happens so fast that by the time the Jocks from Danny's school, Red Hood and Nightwing get Danny off, Joker is beaten badly. He's still feral screaming at Joker though, calling him everything under the sun, spouting off about how the dead are ready to rip him apart when Joker (or you can have Danny call him by his actual name if you wanna strike some "the fuck? How'd he know that?") Finally passes away, that even death will not save him from Danny's wrath. Danny is squirming hard in their holds, nearly breaks free a few times when he hears Joker groaning, but only stops when Jazz, after getting looked over by Red Robin comes running over and just..
Hugs Danny.
And like a kitten getting scuffed by the neck he goes limp. Just breathes heavily, eyes burning from anger, fear, tears, and relief, before he returns the hug. He starts crying and mutters low that he can't lose her, that he almost lost her again and "is this even a fraction how Dan felt when he lost you?"
And Jazz just shushes him and does what she can to comfort him...

You Know How There Are Those AU? Where SUPER Injured Ghosts Need To Retreat To Their Core?
No one seems to be USING that to its fullest potential! For SHENANIGANS! Because! Who?? Could POSSIBLY carry a Halfa's Core safely... but another Halfa?! A FULL ghost would KILL them. A human would be killed! What terribly precarious peril we find ourselves in! Oh nooooooo!
Well, no worry!
As much as Dani fuckin HATES this. That there is her brother. Her Template. Her Clone Daddy and Bestest of Bros. Like HECK she's gonna let him suffer for centuries and possibly DIE. She can take it, Doc! Pop him in! We'll go road tripping and-
What do you MEAN "No"?
Unstable??! Of course she's unstable! But the-.... Oh.
Turns OUT? Dani? Can hitch a ride in DANNY for Emergency Medical Aid... but NOT the other way around. Her body is too loosely held together. He would parasiticly consume her from within. Instead of feeding off her Ecto System like injured ghosts are supposed too, because she's a CLONE? AND an unstable one at that? His Core would just... see her body as free ectoplasm. All of it.
He'd eat her.
Which mean Frostbite can not and WILL NOT allow that.
But he's HURT! That big, off screen, cataclysmic Fight To Save Everybody From *cough cough mumbles* and settle us all in the DC universe, REALLY messed him up! What are we supposed to DO!? He can't STAY like this!!!
Enter-> My FAVORITE DCxDP Trash Ship! Vlad&Lex!!! *horrified screaming from the crowds, someone shouts "oh god, no! Please!"* Ha! There are no gods here, silly billys! Only two terrible, terrible HIGHLY Dramatic, self serving, incredibly damaged, gay peacocks. In Business Suits that cost more then your house is worth.
They're AWFUL~♡
And! Vlad was sent ahead to lay the ground work. Insure there would be no GIWs. Also because no one could stand him and his EXTENSIVE criminal record. But that's besides the point.
But!
You know what he found? A Business Nemesis. Who he routinely dates and/or Dramatically Hate Fu-*coughs* I mean, attempts a Corporate Take Over(tm) off. You know how it is. Business. He ALSO gets to make it no secret he's a "Meta", thanks to the INCOMPETENCE of one Jack Fenton, because that- *seething rant*
Yet? Dispite his STILL burning hatred for Jack? And his finally letting go of Maddie? You know what he STILL wants?
For Danny to be his Son.
*Gets a call from Frostbite*
...............soooooo........ what you're SAYING is..... I can be pregnant with Daniel.
You, Frostbite, need ME, Vladimir Masters, THE ONLY OTHER HALFA, to carry Daniel around inside my body, in what to all appearances resembles a pregnancy, in order to heal him. Because I am an Older And Stronger Halfa Upon Which He Relies.
:)
*instantly begins plotting*
Just? Imagine. Vlad is a FUCKIN LIAR. No one but him would even KNOW what was going on! He just? Rocks up one day, like? *falsely demure* "oh I couldn't POSSIBLY has any scotch, Lex! >:) I'm eating for Two~☆" and just? Deals the MAXIMUM amount of psychic damage he can.
Probably says it at their weekly, public, Veiled Threats Brunch.
It makes front page news. Luthor choked on his eggs. The paparazzi lost their SHIT. Vlad is doing the FULL Celebrity Mom Thing. The classes. The photo shoots. The Gucci sunglasses as he peruses high end strollers. All while HEAVILY suggesting that not only is "The Baby" Lex's.... but that he's going to withhold the child and deny Lex any access.
Danny isn't even aware. He's in a lovely lil medical coma. Dani is trying to find a good spot to plop down Amity. She just know Vlad is being... Vlad. Meh. He can handle it. Dan? He's not even IN the human realm and is not sure he wants to be.
But over in the LEAGUE? Everything's on fuckin FIRE.
Kon is losing his SHIT and Clark is thousand yard staring into the void. Kon's half brother is in the hands of a... Less Then Ideal... Meta that Batman is PRETTY sure is highly suspect. Might be a deliberate weapons experiment. Certainly is a hostage. And the DRAMA.
Lex has never been worse.
He might actually stab his...partner? Vlad. At the hospital. The SECOND the child is born. There are already long term kidnapping plans in the making. He's hiring lawyers. Getting VICIOUS. There have been talks with DEATHSTROKE. By BOTH OF THEM.
Clark wants to cry.

Soooooo your Cheese Melt/Kindred Spirits AU 👀
Since Dani figures out what Vlad’s original plan for her was, (which is what I presume she found down in the lab in that first fake screenshot. Rip XD), how do they end up getting close again? Obviously Vlad saves her life, but like, after that lol. Is it just a matter of Vlad routinely proving that he actually cares over the course of a while that does it? Something more dramatic?? A bit of both???
Also feel free to drop the deets on those episode rewrites you’ve got knocking around your brain, especially Living Large, because I’d love to see how that episode plays out in this AU <3
Essentially, yeah! It's just Vlad continually being really extra as a parent and making decent choices in regards to Dani. (He's selfishly selfless: He values his own happiness the most, but it just so happens that he's thoroughly convinced that Dani's happiness is what makes HIM happy. Leave it to him to twist everything to his own benefit, right?)
Dani is giving him another chance because ultimately, he did save her life and is clearly trying to make up for what was a truly horrible plan (that he actually abandoned pretty much the day after she was born. He may have convinced himself that he was just delaying the plan, but in reality the moment he decided "not today" was the moment he unknowingly doomed himself lol. It just took him a while to actually ACKNOWLEDGE that his priorities changed. He had no intention of letting Danielle die by the time she discovered the truth). Ultimately Dani wants what every child wants: a good parent. And Vlad, well. He's Vlad. But when he wants something, he throws everything into getting it. So Dani no longer believes Vlad is good like she used to, but she does still believe that he loves her.
As for this AU's version of Livin' Large, I'll drop a few details below the cut!
-The Fentons move next door to Vlad and Dani. Dani seems happy about this, Vlad is less so.
-In the original episode, Danny refuses to investigate what the Guys In White want with his family's portal, so this prompts Sam and Tucker to ask Dani for help instead.
-They get caught, as in canon, but Dani pings as critically ectocontaminated and is swiftly loaded up to be shipped off elsewhere. This coincides directly with Danny flying by after his little "maybe i should do something, actually" moment and he immediately swoops in to save her. Unfortunately, the GIW nab him too.
-hilarious hijinks ensue as Danny and Dani try various methods to escape confinement. None of them work.
-Ultimately, it's a deeply annoyed Vlad in a white suit and sunglasses who rolls up to the facility to collect his daughter. ("....What the heck are you wearing?" Danny asks with extreme derision. "It's called a disguise, Daniel, and it's the reason I haven't also been locked in a cage. Unlike you, I might add." Vlad fires back smugly. "You should see his other ones," Dani pipes up, prompting one to wonder just how many times Vlad has impersonated government agents before.)
-Vlad unceremoniously tazes an agent who asked for his ID on the way out.
-Dani turns her big Bambi eyes on Vlad to see if he'll help them save the Ghost Zone from certain destruction. Danny is like "No, that's okay, I think we're good." Vlad gives him a look and flippantly asks if they REALLY think the GIW are smart enough to destroy the Ghost Zone. Dani's like "they're idiots with a giant missile, they're gonna destroy SOMETHING, Dad."
-does this turn into reluctant halfa trio team up? yeah maybe, sue me.

Weeping Siren
Inspired by this post, but not the same thing.
Had this amazing idea I couldn't let go.
So basically, Danny's home world was destroyed, and none of his friends or family are alive or even dead with him. I'm not sure what caused thus but probably some sort of dumb GIW plot. This act also damages, but not destroy, the ghost zone/infinite realms.
Danny becomes the ghost king, sure he might have a bit of paper work, but in this story the main job of the ghost king is to keep the ghost zone working/safe, and even protect it should he have to. Because the ghost zone is damaged, he spends most of his time feelings himself through the ghost zone and fixing areas, maybe this is why the Lazarus pits exist?
Anyways, since Danny's always stressed and is grieving/will always grief his home, the ghosts always feel the sorrow of their great king, whom they all grow protective of, and who they greatly love and appreciate.
Danny takes to singing to relieve stress, help him pass the time, and even let him grief in a safe way. Despite this and the love of his people, being in the ghost zone and effectively working even when he can sleep, it all starts getting to him. So he starts performing his songs to the ghosts, telling his stories, his wishes, his love and grief, what he wishes could've happened, and what he hope WILL happen, all through his songs.
Yet he is still in the ghost zone, and so the ghost suggests he performs to the many dimensions and universes that the ghost zone is connected to, it is infinite after all.
And so he does.
From here the ghost king gains a reputation for being a great, yet sad king. A being that could destroy dimensions without trying being in perpetual grief. His stage name becomes the Weeping Siren.
It continues like this.
My idea come from a story where the JL see Constantine being excited/ecstatic for once. They ask what's up and John says the Weeping Siren is going to perform in their universe soon, and he's excited to attend.
One thing leads to another and John or Zatanna convince the other members to join, or the other way around, the JL convinces the two to take them. Either way they tell the JL time and space and everything stops for those who attend, so there are no consequences, and everyone can have a chance to join. And they want the JL beings from different dimensions and universe will most likely be attending as well.
If you want to go even crazier you can add different versions of the Justice league or those they know, like many different versions of Jason Todd attend and things like that.
I imagine it like a bar/dinner kinda vibe, with a stage that Danny steps on to. He's obviously going to be dressed androgynously, and it's hard to say if he seems more ghost or human, as his forms have long since practically merged with eachother. Sure he could shift more to one of his sides, but he accepts hes both, so he becomes both.
Danny sings songs, even the happier songs have a wisp of sorrow or longing in them.
A song I'd add is Nobody by Mitski. Idk why, but it resonates with me, and I think It'd resonate with this Danny.
This danny totally wears dresses, and i imagine he wears darker colors, more blacks with chains, as well as have glasses that look perscripting perched on his head like you would sunglasses. With a certain flower in his hair. Nods to Tucker and Sam. Yes he wears pants and combat boots popular my many world's men. He'd wear biker gloves and all in all he'd change up his outfits, wearing a multitude of different things popular of both genders. Yet the flower, the dark colors, those glasses, they always stay consistent.

Above and Beyond Chapter 1
Author Note: Giving some love to the other fandom I love. I'm posting the first chapter here; if you like, you can read the rest on ao3 😍
Danny Fenton's alarm clock blared, jolting him out of his dream. Danny rubbed his eyes and groaned, staring at the ceiling plastered with glow-in-the-dark stars and constellations. The room around him was a shrine to his passion for space: posters of astronauts and far-off galaxies adorned every wall, and stacks of NASA magazines sat dog-eared on his desk—a recent poster of the Ares III. Watching the launch on TV had been a fun time. His only regret was he was too busy to fly out and watch it in person.
"Five more minutes," he mumbled, reaching for the snooze button, but accidentally phased his hand through the clock instead. He sighed.
"Rise and shine, Danny boy!" his dad called from downstairs.
"Coming!" Danny yelled back, attempting to sound more cheerful than he felt. As he swung his legs out of bed, he couldn't help but glance at the newspaper article he had pinned to his corkboard: A detailed interview with the Ares III crew, all about the launch and their mission. One day, he dreamed of going to space, just like them.
Balancing high school and teenage life was already a challenge for Danny, but ever since he gained ghost powers from an accident in his parents' lab, his whole world had been turned upside down.
He could barely keep his eyes open in class. Not that math was ever intriguing.
It wasn't easy being a teenager with ghost powers, especially when there were organizations like the GIW who would do anything to get their hands on him. Things had gotten harder with the GIW; they had been cracking down on ghost activity and trying to capture his ghost half. It didn’t help that the GIW had labeled all ghosts as a threat that needed to be neutralized, and since they were labeled as dead, in the GIW's eyes and the government's eyes, they were doing nothing wrong. It was all fine since the dead could not be hurt.
Tucker had discovered that the GIW had also been blocking any social media posts and news from Amity regarding ghosts. So, to the outside world, they were just a backwater town with a fun tourist trap attraction. It didn’t help that Vlad was backing the GIW and encouraging them to censor Amity Park.
"Earth to Danny!" his sister Jazz teased as she poked her head into his room. "Seriously, what's with you lately?"
"Nothing," he lied, forcing a smile. "Just tired."
"Alright," she replied skeptically. "Just remember, I'm here if you need to talk."
"Thanks, Jazz." He appreciated her concern.
Danny reluctantly got ready for the day; he looked at his bed with longing. He barely got any sleep last night. Skulker was giving him problems most of the night.
With a sigh, Danny leaves for school. He hopes that Dash will take it easy on him. If he gets shoved into one more locker today, he might just snap.
******
Danny's eyes snapped open as a bright light flooded the small room. He squinted against the harsh glare, trying to determine where he was. The last thing he remembered was flying home from school when everything went black. Now he found himself strapped to a cold metal table, his arms and legs bound by thick leather anit-ghost straps.
Danny struggled against the glowing green restraints binding him to the cold metal table, but it was no use. The anti-ghost cuffs sapped his strength, leaving him weak and helpless.
"Subject is regaining consciousness," a voice droned from somewhere in the shadows.
Danny's heart pounded in his chest. The Guys in White had captured him. He struggled against the restraints, but he was still too groggy from whatever drug they had used to knock him out.
A man in a pristine white suit loomed over Danny, peering down at him through dark sunglasses. "Let's see what makes this ghost boy tick," he sneered.
Danny screamed in agony as the ecto-shocker sent searing pain through his body. The green electricity crackled over his skin, burning into his flesh. He could smell the sickly stench of his own ectoplasm as it bubbled from the wounds.
"Please, stop!" Danny begged, thrashing against the restraints that held him to the cold metal table. But the white-clad GIW agent standing over him just laughed cruelly and turned up the dial, increasing the voltage.
"Subject is displaying enhanced strength," one of the expressionless agents in white hazmat suits muttered into a recorder. "Increasing power output."
Pain erupted through Danny's body as the restraints glowed brighter, crackling with electricity. He cried out, thrashing against them.
"Please, stop!" Danny begged.
Danny's screams turned to whimpers as the agent finally powered down the ecto-shocker. His small body trembled uncontrollably, his jumpsuit charred and smoking.
He had no idea how long he had been imprisoned here. The agents kept him drugged and disoriented. Time blurred between sessions on the table as they poked, prodded, cut, and shocked him. They were obsessed with learning his secrets, tearing him apart molecule by molecule.
Just as the agent prepared to make another incision, a glowing green vortex suddenly erupted in the room. It swirled violently, like a miniature tornado, and its eerie light cast flickering shadows across the walls.
The agent stumbled back in surprise, the scalpel falling from his hand. Danny watched with wide eyes as the portal stabilized into an oval shape, its center shimmering with supernatural energy. The portal crackled with unstable energy, starting to swirl and pulling things from the room into it, including the table Danny was strapped to.
The moment he passed through its threshold, gravity disappeared. Danny floated weightlessly in a haze of green, the light searing his eyes. This portal was more violent than the one he was used to. It tossed him around, tearing him from his restraints.
Exhaustion crept over him. The torture, the portal - it was too much. Danny's eyes fluttered closed as he lost consciousness, tumbling through the green void. He was unaware as the portal spit him back out.
When he came to, the first thing he noticed was the quiet. Gone were the harsh lights and sounds of the lab. He lay sprawled on rough, red soil, a faint breeze stirring his white hair. This didn’t feel like earth, it was too cold, and he felt how hard it was to breath here, he was better off not breathing and letting his core do the work. Even though his core burned with pain from the torture he undertook. He rolled onto his back and stared up at the unfamiliar night sky.
Danny’s core sang with happiness. He could feel the difference in gravity. *Am I on Mars? * He thought to himself.
Groaning, Danny pushed himself up on his hands and knees, wincing as pain lanced through him. His hazmat suit was tattered and burnt, green-red ectoplasm staining the fabric. The GWI had done a number on him.
Shielding his eyes from the harsh sunlight, Danny scanned his new surroundings. The dusty Martian landscape stretched as far as he could see. In the distance, a cluster of habitats and rovers marked what had to be the Ares III site.
Danny had avidly followed the mission back on Earth. He knew the crew: Commander Lewis, Pilot Martinez, Dr. Beck, Johanssen, Vogel, and the botanist Mark Watney.
Danny shivered; they were his only chance of survival, stranded and injured as he was.
Holding his side, Danny began stumbling toward the habitats, his jumpsuit boots leaving prints in the rust-colored soil. He had to make it there before his strength gave out completely. Just a little farther...
Suddenly, his legs buckled, sending him sprawling face-first onto the hard ground. The last of his energy spent, Danny's glowing green eyes slid closed. He lay motionless as his blood pooled beneath him, staining the Martian soil a vivid emerald.
*This is it. At least I got to go to another planet...*

Humanity
Upon their arrest by the GIW together, Valerie learns something interesting about Phantom and herself that make her question just how human both herself and Phantom are.
note that this isn’t a phic phight thing, just something i wrote literally months ago for Lexx but forgot that i wrote
on FFN and AO3
----------------
They didn't even have the decency to arrest her before Mr. Lancer's class. Being arrested for...well, the Guys in White were never really clear as to why they showed up to Casper High to arrest her. But whatever the reason, that would have been one hell of an excuse as to why she was not just missing, but why she couldn't turn in that book report that she not only didn't do, but hadn't even read a single page of yet. Valerie had an inkling she knew why, but she remained completely silent the entire march out the front doors of the school. She wasn't an idiot after all.
The agent to her left opened the door, and the agent to her right put his hand on her head to duck her into the white SUV. The door closed, and Valerie glanced to see just how tinted the windows were, as well as the police-style framing of the windows and the separation between the driver and passenger as well as the backseat dwellers.
"Oh, I was wondering why we stopped here."
That familiar voice made her jump, and she turned to see Phantom. He was in the exact same predicament. Hands behind his back, leaning against the seat, though she could immediately tell that his handcuffs were much clunkier and glowed. Obviously anti-ghost.
"You!" Valerie hissed. She immediately leaned into the window, lifting her leg up, and she began to kick him repeatedly. "What the hell are you doing here!?"
"Ow!" Phantom hissed as she got him in the shoulder, and then his rib. She didn't stop, and she didn't miss. "AH! Fuck, stop it! OW!"
"Knock it off!" one of the agents boomed. The sudden, strict tone made Valerie pause. She kicked him one more time, square in the face, before finally stopping.
Phantom made a weird wheezing noise, and she saw him shift to rub his nose on his upper arm and shoulder. He frowned.
"My nose is bleeding," he complained.
"I hope your nose is broken!" Valerie snapped back at him.
Phantom glared at her. He made a weird noise in his throat, and it took Valerie a moment to realize what he was doing. Preparing spit. And indeed, the ghost teen stuck his tongue out, drool instantly dripping, and he leaned in. Valerie instantly leaned away from him.
"Ew! Gross! Get away from me!" she complained.
"Nu-uh!" Phantom replied, his tongue still out as he continued to scoot. He got close enough to open his mouth, and some of his saliva dripped onto her knee.
"Gross, gross, gross!" she shrieked. Valerie kicked him in the side, and Phantom let out a pained wheeze.
"Knock. It. Off," the other agent snapped at them. They had gotten into the driver and passenger's seat, and both were glaring at them.
"She started it!" Phantom accused. The driver frowned at him, obviously not amused. Phantom scooted back to his side of the backseat. Valerie stayed pressed against the window and door. She could hear the drive mutter something about hating kids before turning the vehicle on, and they drove off.
--------------------------
They made the duo sit in the interrogation room for three hours, according to the clock. They had, thankfully, just connected the teenagers to the table via a long chain and handcuffs, so that they could at least be a bit more comfortable, even though Phantom, and for some reason her, were both given anti-ghost bracelets to wear. A box of tissues were also tossed onto the table, and Phantom had spent the first half hour tending to his bloodied nose. He stuffed all the used tissues, grossly, into his pocket, though she suspected why he did that. It had his DNA on it.
Phantom nor her attempted conversation. Neither were stupid. They essentially stared at each other and the walls, their only words were occasional out-loud wondering of when somebody was going to show up to question them already.
Obviously her more pressing question was why the hell they were still together. For some reason, Phantom was with her every step of the way of their weird little field trip. They got escorted in together, processed together, and now were sat at the exact same interrogation table. Why? She had absolutely no idea. Didn't they normally separate people they arrested?
At exactly 6:38 PM, somebody finally opened the door, and she and Phantom sat straight up.
The agent that sat before them was a large man, muscular and tall with big hands and sunglasses that fully blocked any chance of the teens from seeing what he was looking at.
"We know you're both half-ghost."
Valerie's mind instantly went to Vlad. That must have been what he was...she had been debating with herself for weeks now as to what he was. A ghost disguised as a human? A human who had ghost powers?
She pushed those aside to look at Phantom. To her surprise, he was pale. Nearly as white as his hair, with anxiety sweat drops beginning to form. Her interest peaked instantly. Silence hung in the air. The man said nothing, simply keeping his attention intensely on them. Valerie
"That's ridiculous," Valerie finally said something. She nearly added that the entire idea itself was ridiculous too. Well, it kind of was. It was so weird to grasp, but it wasn't really something that she wanted to think too hard about these days, and especially now. There was nothing more that she'd love to do than to throw that manipulative old bastard under the weird half-ghost freak bus. However, not only was it probably not a good idea to start beef with a literal superpowered-villain billionaire...but Dani was still out there.
"Don't lie to me." The man sounded agitated. "Both of your ectoplasmic readings are abnormal."
Ectoplasmic reading? Her? Valerie stared at him as if he had grown a second head.
"I shouldn't have any ectoplasmic reading," she pointed out. "I'm alive. Alive people don't have ectoplasmic readings."
The man opened up his folder, pulling out a few choice pieces of papers to slide her way. Phantom silently watched them, his eyes wide and his face looking utterly blank yet...so fearful. Valerie opted to ignore him for a while, accepting the papers to hold as she read through them.
She was familiar with how to read ectoplasmic readings, charts and monitors by now. Green eyes scanned the data, frowning in confusion as she checked the details, and she could see out of the corner of her eye Phantom leaning in to read too. She adjusted her position so that he couldn't.
This description was definitely her, and...she was giving off ectoplasmic readings. Not really in the same way as a normal ghost; there was something distinctively different about hers that any set of trained eyes could pick up on. But how?
"I don't understand," Valerie spoke slowly. "I'm alive." She put the documents back down on the table. "You can take a swap or slap some ghost goop stuff on me. Hell, prick my finger." Valerie held her palm out to the man. Her anti-ghost bracelet sparkled a bit in the light of the room. At least she now knew why they made her wear the bracelets too. "I'm not dead."
The interviewer stared intently at her hand. He gave a neutral hum of acknowledgement, swooping the papers back up.
"Testing and experiments will be reserved for a later time," he replied. Valerie got instant goosebumps. Testing and experiments? "Maybe a few hours in holding will help you realize why you should just come clean to us."
"Can I get some water first?" Valerie asked. The agent snorted in amusement as he stood up.
"Ghosts don't eat or drink."
She felt numb, and she had no idea how to respond to that. Two more agents came into the room, and they silently took the teenagers further into the building until they reached a door. The third agent opened it, and Phantom and Valerie were ushered inside.
The room almost immediately led into bars, and the first thing Valerie could think of was just how much it looked like jail. Two uncomfortable looking bunk beds on either side, a toilet in the middle, a small sink, and no windows. The light was dim, and the room was cold.
Phantom was pushed in first, and then Valerie, and the bars clunked as they closed. She turned to see the bars begin to glow as the bars were locked.
And there was no goodbyes. The agents were eerily silent as they filed out, and the door was shut behind them. She could hear the faint click as it also locked.
Valerie turned to see Phantom's reaction, and he still looked shaken and pale. She already suspected the answer, but she needed to hear it.
"So...are you?" Valerie asked.
"No!" Phantom's answer was way too quick. "What about you? Don't you hate ghosts?"
"I'm not half ghost!" she snapped back. "I have no clue why they'd think that."
Phantom studied her for a moment. His eyes lit up.
"Your suit!" he declared. "The one Technus gave you. It must make your reading wonky."
The second he reminded her, she felt a cold shiver. Suddenly her heartbeat felt off, and she assumed she was colder than usual because of...ya know. That couldn't be true. It had to be wonky readings. The suit was so nice...so much nicer than the suit that she had made herself. It was so much more powerful, so much nicer, just flat out cooler.
She put her heart over her chest. She still had a heartbeat, right?
"What's your excuse?" she asked. Phantom didn't say anything. He turned his attention to the wall, staring blankly at it.
"...Why would they let us stay trapped in here together?" Phantom changed the subject. Valerie narrowed her eyes at him, but she had to admit. It was a good point. "Especially knowing that we'd just plot our escape together."
"Pump the breaks, Phantom. I'm not escaping," Valerie scoffed. "They'll realize their mistake and just let me go."
"Well, they're not gonna let me go," Phantom frowned. "The Guys in White don't exactly play nice with ghosts. And I'm not leaving without you."
"Not my problem," Valerie replied. She raised an eyebrow at him. "Unless...of course there's a reason for it to be my problem."
"You can't just do it out of the kindness of your heart?" Phantom sounded sarcastic, despite staring at her desperately. Valerie crossed her arms. "Please?"
"Give me one good reason to escape with you."
And thus began a staring contest. Phantom shifted from foot to foot, and he glanced at the floor. A lightbulb made the realization click. The GIW knew her identity. They arrested her at school. But they didn't know Phantom's. Nobody probably did. This was likely a ploy to get them to reveal themselves to each other. How or why, Valerie wasn't sure. But now it was glaringly obvious to her.
Phantom was half-ghost. Just like Dani. Just like Vlad. The Guys in White don't play nice with ghosts, and she had a strong feeling that they didn't care much about playing nice with humans either. Especially if they suspected that there was ghost within them.
"Nevermind," Valerie sighed. Phantom stared at her, and he...looked scared. "I can destroy ghosts…" But I really can't take part in destroying a human.
Phantom grew a bit pale again, as they both knew the unspoken words. He took a deep, shaky breath. His reaction was all she needed to know, that this wasn't some weird lie or ploy.
"So. What's our game plan?" he asked.
Valerie studied their surroundings. She reached out to touch the bars of their shared cell, taking immediate note that she wasn't shocked.
"Well, obviously there's that big shield outside," Valerie lightly mused.
"I can get past that shield," Phantom spoke up. "Under the...right circumstances."
Valerie nodded. If Phantom was able to turn human away from the prying eyes of cameras and more, they could both obviously escape right out the front door. Hell, they could likely utilize both Phantom and his? Human? Side? Whatever he was called.
"This facility was designed for ghosts, not humans," Phantom continued. "If we worked together, we can probably make a quick exit." Valerie hummed in agreement.
"That's not just enough," Valerie replied. "I'll just get arrested again. They know who I am. Like, they know Valerie Gray is the huntress." Phantom frowned, and he thought for a moment.
"We could maybe delete their evidence files or something?" he suggested. Valerie paced their cell for a moment.
"There has to be some kind of computer security room somewhere," Valerie spoke aloud to herself. "If we can find it, we can probably wipe evidence and also fully take down the shield."
Phantom leaned against the back wall of the cell.
"I don't think that's enough," he replied. Valerie stopped pacing to stare at him. "We need to make sure the Guys in White don't do this again. Ever. Never even have the chance to get to this point again." Valerie scowled.
"They help hunt ghosts!" she protested.
"And they'd consider Danielle a ghost and rip her to shreds," Phantom countered. The reminder of that little girl hit her straight in the gut. She sighed.
"I don't know," she said slowly.
"They're a government organization, they'll rebuild," Phantom pushed. "We just need to stall them long enough to buy time for us to figure out how to keep you, Danielle and I safe."
She hated it, but...yeah. She wasn't really in the best position either. Valerie had no clue what was going on with her, but the Guys in White were incredibly persistent...and she knew her dad wouldn't be able to afford a lawyer for her anymore.
Valerie held her wrist up. Her suit's bracelet was basically hidden underneath the anti-ghost one, but she could still feel it there. Her suit wasn't gone. She could still access it, and that made her feel more confident in that she was still human. Which she had to be. Right?
Valerie activated her suit, and she held her wrist up to read the screen. She pressed a few buttons.
"I think I can figure out a map of this place," she said. "And from there we can see where's what."
Her forearm glowed brightly as it gathered data. It took a few moments of calculating, but soon, she had her results. Phantom was soon peering over her shoulder, both of them studying the map.
"How accurate is this?" Phantom questioned.
"It tends to be fairly decent. Sometimes it's hit or miss with collapsed buildings, but overall it's spot on," she replied. She adjusted the screen, zooming it out. "I can only get the floor we're on though."
"That looks like it could be some kind of utility room," Phantom pointed to a specific room. Valerie zoomed in on it, studying it.
"Yeah," she said slowly. "Yeah. Gotta be. It's got a lot of power coming to or from there. Has to be a source, or at the very least some kind of major technology area."
"Either way, we should destroy it," Phantom said. Valerie frowned.
"I don't know," she hesitated.
"I mean, you can't even summon your powers."
Phantom glanced down at his wrists, glancing curiously at them before setting his sights on Valerie's arms.
"Can you shoot them off?" he asked.
Valerie tried to summon one of her weapons. She waited. And she waited. Nothing came, and her gut became queasy. She couldn't get her ghost weapon. None of them would summon. This had to be a bad sign. Or was it just the GIW prepared against humans too? That was the most logical explanation. She couldn't be…But also she could be...after all the ectoplasmic readings...
"Um, actually, I think I can…" Phantom's voice caused her to truly look at him again. The ghost was fiddling with his wristbands, using his knees to lock it in place as he attempted to slip his wrist through the band with no success.
"Here, let me try," Valerie interrupted him. Phantom glanced up at her.
"Can you shoot them?" he asked. Valerie forced a weak smile, but she held up a screwdriver.
"Got something even better. My travel tool kit," she replied. After too many breakdowns in the field, she had replaced a small pouch that previously held smoke bombs, something she rarely used, with a few small tools. It was easily one of the best choices she made.
Phantom held his wrist out to her, and she turned the bracelet around. Eventually she managed to pry a piece of the metallic covering off, exposing screws and a few wires. Valerie didn't undo or cut anything right away, both her and Phantom silently trying to make sense of the connection and mechanics behind it. Would really suck to find out the hard way that disconnecting a certain wire would trigger an alarm, after all.
"I think you shouldn't touch the red wire," Phantom lightly mused. "Pretty sure that's a power, and if you turn it off it'll be bad news."
"Mmm, yeah," Valerie agreed. "I think I can just unscrew this though, and we should just be careful to not slip the wires off."
Phantom nodded, and he waited patiently as she did just so. After twenty minutes of careful disconnecting, Phantom had two hands free, and he flexed his hands with a happy sigh.
"God, that just feels so much better," he told her. He motioned for her to hand him the screwdriver. "Here, I'll do yours." Valerie shook her head.
"I can't leave. I won't say anything if you escape, but they know my identity."
Phantom frowned.
"I'm not leaving you here. Come on, you saw your map. We can destroy their power. We can destroy this entire building," he began, only for Valerie to cut him off.
"And do more destruction? Is that all you think about?" she snapped. "You're safe. They know my identity. You want me to get more charges or something? I can't risk it. I'll just stay here. They'll figure out soon enough that I'm fully human." A full human who apparently had mixed logic as to whether or not they could use their ghost hunting suit. If she was fully human, she could summon those weapons, right? Unless it was specifically preventing any ghost weapon, regardless of the user, use it.
"Red, I don't think you understand," Phantom told her. "They're not going to go easy on you. Even if you prove you're human, they're not going to believe you. You heard them. They already denied you contact to the outside world."
That reminder sent a chill down her spine.
"Then tell my dad," she told him. Phantom stared at her. He began to unzip his suit, and she instantly began to look away. "Dude, what the hell?"
"Valerie, look at me," he demanded.
"You're naked!" she protested.
"I'm not naked, just look."
She decided to humor him with the intention of taking a quick peek. But when she saw him, she felt a cold sweat hit her. Phantom had only zipped enough to expose his chest, and there was a distinctive Y-patterned scar on his chest that stood out against the other scars.
"This is what happened last time I was trapped here. I'm not going to leave you alone here," he stated. He suddenly looked away, and he quickly zipped his suit back up. "There's no way in hell I'm going to risk this happening to you. Red, you need to come with me."
That urgent gut feeling of needing to go finally crashed into her. The GIW would never believe her. Not just because of stubbornness, but...Valerie herself wasn't even sure anymore.
She swallowed dryly, and she nodded. Her right wrist was offered to him.
"Do you know what to do?" she asked. Phantom scowled.
"I just watched you do it," he reminded her. She rolled her eyes, but held her wrist up for him, and a half hour later, she too, was free.
She wasn't sure if she was more concerned or relieved to instantly feel that distinctive rush of power back. The second Phantom removed her bracelet, she knew that she could summon any of her ghost weapons now at her fingertips. But she could still summon her suit regardless, and activate her GPS abilities. Was this normal? Valerie had no clue what this meant anymore.
"So, next step, I think we can escape through here."
Valerie looked up to see Phantom was now floating by the vent at the top of their cell. He was already using her screwdriver to undo the vent cover. She pulled her map back up on her forearm, glancing at it and studying it.
"I'm pretty sure the vent will go straight to that electric room," she told him.
"Oh, now you're finally seeing the big picture?" Phantom lightly teased, glancing over his shoulder as he popped the vent cover off. She nodded at him, but didn't crack a smile.
"...You and Dani may look just alike, but I never want you two to have matching scars," she said. Phantom's smile dropped, and he nodded in agreement.
He placed the vent covering on the top bunk, handing Valerie back her screwdriver. She slipped it back in it's pouch.
"Here, I'll give you a boost up," Phantom offered, pressing his hands together. She nodded, stepping a foot onto his hand. With ease, Phantom pushed her up, and she grabbed onto the vent, pulling herself in. It was surprisingly fairly roomy yet not, and she managed to get comfortable on her stomach, pulling her map back up.
"Ready to commit several federal crimes?" Phantom's voice half joked. She looked behind her the best she could to see the ghost right behind her. She snorted in amusement.
"Ready as I'll ever be," she replied. "Just follow me. It's time to give these idiots hell."
And hell they did. Who knew that the Guys in Whites headquarters could cause such a colorful explosion.

The events of Doctors Disorders reveals that humans CAN have ghost powers. How does the public react to this? What does this mean for Phantom? prompt by @mystyrust
prequel to Ghost Farm
word count: 2665
warning: character death, experimentation, kidnapping
i need you guys to know that agent z sounds like either e boy or fix it felix from wreck it ralph
A glowing mosquito sat in an ecto-proof jar on a pristine white counter. It bounced off the sides of the glass, desperately trying to escape. A black, gloved hand reached out and grabbed the jar and shook it.
“So humans can have ghost powers.”
An agent in an all white suit studied the mosquito.
“How was this any different than possession? Why did this kind of possession grant the students ghost powers instead of overshadowing them?”
He put the jar down and pushed himself away from the counter, facing another man in a white suit who had been standing behind him.
“Agent K. If we can figure out how these mosquitoes gave the teenagers ghost powers, we can use it in our fight against the ectoplasmic scum.”
“How would you suggest we go about that, Agent O?”
“We’ll have to reopen the old research compound. We can’t have the people of Amity Park finding out we’re doing this kind of research. The old compound is further away from the city so they won’t be able to trace it back to us so easily.”
“What about the test subjects?”
Agent O smiled darkly.
“We’ll have to go find some, now won’t we?”

Star was walking down the street, on her way to meet Paulina at the mall. They were supposed to go pick up some dresses for a fancy dinner at Paulina’s house. Star had told Paulina that she already had something she could wear at home, but her friend insisted Star let her buy her something.
She turned around a corner heading down another street. The sidewalk here was pretty empty. The only person she saw was an old woman walking into her house and when her door shut, Star was all by herself.
That’s when she felt it. There were eyes gazing into the back of her head and she quickly picked up her pace.
She could hear heavy footsteps approaching from behind along with the crunch of gravel underneath tires. Looking over her shoulder, Star saw a man in a white suit behind her and a white car trailing behind him. For a moment, she felt a small relief. It was the GIW. They couldn’t possibly be after her. They must be tracking a ghost.
But the man had nothing in his hand and the way he stared at Star said otherwise.
She turned back around and was about to start running when a hand grabbed her long blonde hair. She cried out as she was pulled backwards towards the man. The car stopped beside them and another man left the car, pulling a bag over her head and tying her wrists together. They both lifted her up and she heard one open the trunk and then she was being thrown in.
“Help!” She screamed before the trunk slammed shut above her.
She heard two doors open and close before the car revved up and started driving away. Panic wormed its way into her chest and she started trying to pull her hands free.
Luckily, the rope around her wrists loosened. She didn’t know why these agents couldn’t tie a knot, but she had to be grateful for it. She pulled the bag off of her head but she still couldn’t see anything from inside the trunk.
Feeling around, Star tried to find a corner of the trunk where the tail light would be. When she found it, she turned around and started trying to kick into the spot. It took a couple tries, but she finally felt it start to give. With one final kick, a hole was made and she could see light coming into the trunk.
She turned back around and started pulling material away from the hole, trying to make it bigger. When it was big enough she stuck her hand through and started trying to wave it around in the daylight.
Suddenly, Star could feel the car turning. She hadn’t noticed they were slowing down until the turn and her heart rate began to pick up. Did they hear her kicking?
After another couple of turns, the car came to a stop and she could hear a door open.
The pop of the trunk sounded and she was blinded by the sunlight that shone behind the man who was staring down at her. She held his gaze in fear for a few moments and the next thing she knew he was swinging at her and she was gone.
QQQQQ
Star slowly woke up. The world came to her slowly and through her blurry eyes she could see white tiles, white walls, and a glass with a different man standing outside it.
She yelped and suddenly she was falling into the hard cot beneath her. She looked back up towards the ceiling. She had been floating? But how?
“What did you do to me?”
The man finished taking notes on his clipboard before his head tilted up to look at her. His dark sunglasses glinted in the light of the bright room. From somewhere to his left, he held up a jar with a bug in it. Was that…?
“The ghost mosquitos?”
“We are currently studying the causes and effects of ghost powers in humans. Our first study involves introducing one of the ectoplasmic specimens to a host and observing.”
Star took in a sharp breath. “You put one of those inside me? On purpose?”
The agent continued without acknowledging her. “You have the honor of being our first test subject. We would have never thought of the possibility of humans having ghost powers until half the high school was quarantined. We can guarantee this information to be invaluable in the battle against ghosts.”
A mounting horror was beginning to gnaw its way into Star’s chest. “What are you going to do to me?”
“We will be performing a series of tests, starting with measuring the effects of long term possession and then moving onto introducing ectoplasm to the host.”
“Ectoplasm?! Isn’t that toxic to humans?!”
“Yes, but we’ll introduce it in small amounts that increase over time.”
Star stared at the ground below her, horrified. “You guys are crazy.”
“Not crazy, innovative.”
Her head snapped up to look at the agent. He had a sly look on his face, like this was the best possible thing he could be doing at this time.
“You’re crazy!” Star shouted.
She shot forward faster than what should be possible and slammed her fist into the glass in front of the agent’s face. He didn’t so much as flinch. He just lifted his clipboard back up and began to write another note.
“Promising progress.”
Then he began to walk away.
“Come back!” She pounded on the glass again. “Come back, you son of a bitch!”
He continued walking away down the hallway until she couldn’t see him anymore. Alone in her quiet room, Star’s anger faded back to fear. She looked down at her shaking hand.
How much worse could this get? What kind of changes were they expecting to happen to her? It was just possession! Overshadowing! Albeit, a different kind. Normally people don’t remember what happened while they were overshadowed, she didn’t know the difference between this and that. She wasn’t even in the batch of kids that had been quarantined.
But she had been flying. Moving faster than she should be able to. She’d been so much stronger than what she actually is, and she still couldn’t get out. Couldn’t break free.
Star took another look down the long hallway and dread filled her stomach.
She didn’t think she’d be getting out of here.
QQQQQ
With no changes in her powers via mosquito three days later, the agents went onto the next part of their plan.
One minute Star was floating above her bed counting the ceiling tiles, the next she was on the floor clutching at her head as something pulsed in her room. By the time the pulsing stopped, she was already strapped into a chair. She could feel the full weight of gravity and she knew the mosquito was gone. They were moving onto the injections now.
She looked up and sitting in front of her was another different agent. This one looked younger than the three she had seen already.
“Hi! I’m Agent Z!”
She hasn’t met any rookie GIW agents before, but that must be what this guy is. The newest addition.
“Today we’ll be starting the introduction of ectoplasm trial! Today we’ll start with a small amount of ectoplasm, which will increase in amount each day! As the days go by, we’ll start doing two doses of ectoplasm per day.”
Maybe she can work with this.
“Uh. You seem real chipper. Are you new to the GIW or something?”
“Yep!” Agent Z said brightly. “This is my first special assignment!”
“Doesn’t it bother you that you’re experimenting on a human though? Isn’t that a terrible thing that they’re making you do?”
“They’re not making me do anything!”
Star paused. “What?”
“I was the only agent who volunteered for the position! I think this is all very exciting!”
“What the hell.” Star whispered. “You’re all insane.”
“It’s not insane if you’re benefiting the rest of humankind!”
“That-”
Star let out a cry of pain as she was interrupted. The needle plunged into her arm and Agent Z pushed the ectoplasm out of the needle and into her veins. It burned as it flowed into her arm and was kind of cold, but it was nothing compared to the pins and needles sensation that began to cover her entire body.
“There we go!” Agent Z said chipperly. “I’ll see you again tomorrow for your next dose!”
He got up and walked to the door, scanned his keycard, and left.
What happened to the observation part of their research?
Suddenly the straps holding her wrists and ankles in place opened and she shot up away from the chair. She hobbled her way to her bed, the pins and needles sensation crawling faster through her legs and feet with each step she took.
She flopped onto the bed and cringed as the sensation crawled over every inch of her body. She looked up at the ceiling, intending to continue counting the tiles again, when she saw something new.
A small camera was fastened to the glass on the outside of her room, staring at her.
She stared at it for a few moments before she lifted her hand up and flipped off whoever was watching her.
QQQQQ
Four days later and she was starting to feel sick from the ectoplasm injections. Today was the first day they’d be giving her two doses and the pins and needles sensation still settled in her limbs, never having gone away from when they woke her up with the prick of a needle at seven am that morning.
She was starting to face constant nausea and her hands had been clipping through the things in her room for two days now. She could barely stomach the meager amount of food they were giving her anymore and she knew she wouldn’t last much longer if this kept up.
Star heard the door slide open from where she laid on her bed. She knew they could tell she wasn’t doing well. They no longer used that horrible pulsing thing on her before they came in. She didn’t have enough energy to fight back anymore.
Agent Z quickly approached her and sat her down in the chair, positioning her wrists so that the straps locked firmly around them. He roughly grabbed her arm and stabbed her with the needle. She screamed as the ectoplasm flowed into her arm, hot and burning all the way in.
“There we go, all done!” Agent Z said as he pulled away. “That wasn’t so hard was it?”
She glared at the man through her greasy hair. He was talking to her like she was a child getting a shot at the doctor’s office.
“Fuck you.” She spat.
“I’ll see you tomorrow for your next dose!”
With that, he swiped his keycard and walked through the door and out of the room.
The straps released her wrists and she collapsed to the floor. Shivers wracked through her body even though she could still feel the hot ectoplasm flowing in her veins.
Star didn’t want to die, but she hoped to whatever deity might be out there that this would all be over soon. She didn’t know how much more she could take.
Suddenly, her stomach rolled and she was gagging and throwing up the little bit she had managed to eat earlier. Spots lined her vision and she slowly crawled her way to her bed, just wanting to fall asleep. Almost as soon as she got on it and curled up, she was gone.
QQQQQ
When Star awoke the next morning, she realized she was already strapped into the chair with Agent Z standing before her. The two agents that had first picked her up were standing on the other side of the window.
“Due to your worsening condition, today will be the last day of the ectoplasm injection trial, you’ll only receive one dose today. Starting tomorrow we’ll begin testing the effects of ectoplasmic charged electricity. We will take a few days break in order for you to gain some semblance of stability.”
“Why not just stop the trials altogether then?” Star rasped.
“The information we have gathered this far is invaluable. We’ve learned that some ways to attain ghost powers are safer than others, while others are more dangerous but much more potent. If We can find that balance between these then we’d have the ultimate weapon in our hands.”
“You guys are monsters.”
“Your participation will do much to protect your friends and family in Amity Park.” He nodded at Agent Z. “Go ahead.”
Agent Z plunged the needle into Star’s arm.
With that last injection, Star screamed. The sound reverberated around her room over and over again, Agent Z covered his ears to protect himself from it. And then suddenly, Star’s ghost was ripping itself from her body, which fell limp against the chair it was strapped to.
Her ghost form flickered brightly, like a star in the sky. She turned her brightly glowing eyes on Agent Z who was looking up at her with wide eyes, his hands still covering his ears. Star dove for him.
Lifting him by the throat, Star picked him up and started throwing him into every wall as she flew around her small room. The ghostly trail she left behind her looked like the tail of a sparkling comet and soon blood was spattering onto the glass.
Agent O pressed a button on the outside wall and the room lit up in a bright green flash and Star was falling to the floor, a beaten agent falling from her grasp into a heap.
“Call in the sanitization and disposal team and have them come clean up this mess.” Agent O said to Agent K, who was staring at Agent Z inside the room.
“Our Agent Z’s never last long.” K said sharply. “What should we do with the girl’s ghost?”
Agent O had a thoughtful look on his face. “We’ll keep it here for study. Her ghost must be a powerful one, that act it displayed immediately upon death is one I’ve never seen before.”
He turned around to face Agent K. “We’ll need to go gather another test subject. We’ll plan to go in two days once this mess is cleaned up.”
“Sir, I respectively ask how will we get any conclusive data if all of our subjects keep dying?”
Agent O barked out a laugh. “Who cares if they die. All that matters is that we get our answers in the end. What better way to get ghosts for research and dissection than by harvesting them ourselves?”
“Like a ghost farm, sir?”
“Yes.” Agent O Smiled wickedly.
“Like a ghost farm.”

Why has no one made a Yu Yu Hakusho x Danny Phantom crossover yet?
?I mean, honestly, look at these two shows! Look at them! How is it that no one (that I know of) has made a crossover with them yet? There’s so much potential!  I mean honestly! Both are about a 14-year-old who died in or before the first episode, came back to life through some sort of shenanigans, and ended up with supernatural abilities as a result. Both Danny and Yusuke have a very close knit friend group comprised of people who know about said supernatural abilities and help them fight all form of malicious supernatural entities (Danny fights ghosts, Yusuke fights demons). Both Yusuke and Danny have a rival/arch-nemesis who, at the start of the series, is leagues above the protagonists in terms of power, but ends up being surpassed by the main protagonist sometime during the second season of their respective show. Both Vlad and Toguro serve as foils to Danny and Yusuke respectively, and while they may feel some sort of kinship with them for some reason or other, they tend to see the young protagonist as someone who is below them in terms of power, intelligence, and skills (even after that is no longer the case). Both Danny and Yusuke are snarky and seem like delinquents to all but their closest friends, but secretly they have a heart of absolute gold. Both would (and have) died for any one of their friends, and they likely have a metric fuck ton of trauma from the many, many, many times they almost watched their friends and family die right in front of them. And of course, both Danny and Yusuke are likely to become kings of their own supernatural realm (if you disregard DP’s canon in favor of the fanon like I do).
So then the question becomes this: how would a crossover between the two shows go?
Here’s how I see it playing out:
Sometime after the last episode of Yu Yu Hakusho, and right after the events of Reign Storm, Yusuke (who I would say is about 18-19 years old now) gets a call from Koenma for the first time in almost 4 years. Koenma tells Yusuke that he needs him to come back for one final case: investigate a small town in Northeastern America for recent spikes in spiritual and demonic activity.
When Yusuke asks why Koenma wants him to look into what is seemingly a tourist trap town, Koenma tells him that the town was recently encased under a dome of spirit energy, disappeared for almost 24 hours, and then suddenly reappeared again, and Koenma suspects that someone- or something- from spirit world might be responsible.
Three calls and four plane tickets later, Yusuke and the gang land in Illinois and make their way to Amity Park. Kuwabara takes one (1) step into the town and immediately freezes. He’s always been the most spirit-sensitive of the group, and this town is setting off all of his proverbial alarms. Kurama, Hiei, and Yusuke also notice something off about the town, like everyone here has way higher spirit energy than normal.
The four make their way through town, noticing more and more as they continue. They notice the massive craters that litter the streets. They notice the constant smell of spirit and demon energy that drenches the town like a fog, covering everything and everyone. They notice the small, silvery-grey and green devices that almost everyone seems to have on their wrist, and Yusuke can’t help but think about how similar they look to the spirit-detecting gadgets he used to have back during the beginning of his detective career. They notice the metal panels that every store seems to have hanging above their windows, waiting to come down and defend from some unknown beast.
They notice how, whenever they appear in an area, everyone in the vicinity goes silent. Tense. Wary of them. Like they know three demons just appeared, even if all of them look human.
Yusuke and his team split up to search through the town and cover more ground, agreeing to meet by the local highschool in two hours. Things just get even weirder from there.
Kurama finds a patch of wild blood blossoms growing near the forest, despite the fact that they were declared extinct more than 200 years ago. Hiei sees a pair of burly men wearing all white suits and dark sunglasses dragging a young man with white hair and sunglasses away for questioning. Kuwabara is surprised when a small, glowing green puppy appears in front of him, only to vanish when he leans down to pet it.
Yusuke finds a massive stone brick building with what almost looks like a UFO perched on top, and huge neon sign with the words FentonWorks on it. Here, the spirit energy is almost suffocating, and it feels like molasses, thick and heavy and dense on Yusuke’s senses. He feels something else though, something that just barely manages to break through the thick ambient spirit energy that swamps this entire block: a ghost. And a powerful one at that.
By the time the group reconvenes at the high school, everyone is tense. They’re sure that there’s something sketchy in this town, but none of them have gotten any concrete leads on what caused the town’s sudden disappearance and reappearance. Almost none of the townsfolk give them any answers, and the few that do are vague and confusing, or outright lies. Kuwabara firmly believes that this town is haunted by ghosts, and that they’re what caused the sudden disappearance, but Yusuke, having been a ghost himself at one point, is less inclined to believe that. Yusuke is convinced that the house with the weird UFO thing and abnormal spirit energy has something to do with it, and the gang agrees that would be the best place to start.
Before they can do that though, they all suddenly sense a MASSIVE spike in spirit energy, coming from the center of town. Yusuke and the gang book it to where the spike is, hoping to get some sort of lead.
Meanwhile, Danny is having a fight with Skulker, made slightly more difficult than normal due to the fact that he’s still recovering from the whole Pariah Dark fiasco. He’s been on edge all day, ever since he sensed that weird ectosignature near his house. He’d felt the typical chill of his ghost sense, but the typical puff of blueish smoke wasn’t present like it usually was. On top of that, he’d felt a small jolt of electricity, too big to be chalked up to static electricity and carrying with it a hint of... something. Something not entirely human.
But when Danny had tried to investigate, he’d come up empty handed. Which as you can guess, made Danny My-friends-and-family-have-all-almost-been-killed-by-a-ghost-disguised-as-a-human-at-least-once Fenton more than a little nervous.
So Danny’s fighting Skulker when he feels that not-quite ghost sense again, except this time it’s even stronger than before and waaaay the hell closer. And now Danny goes from nervous to flat out terrified, because whoever or whatever is triggering his not-quite ghost sense is really fucking strong, and oh fuck are there four of them?! Are they getting closer?!?! Whatever it is is really strong, like almost stronger than Pariah Dark and Danny was barely able to take him down at 100% strength with the enhanced suit, and he no longer has the suit and he still has not fully recovered since then, so how in the fresh hell is he gonna fight four beings who are at least on par with Pariah?
Skulker notices the sudden power spike as well and immediately bounces, leaving Danny to panic over these four insanely powerful entities.
Yusuke and the gang make it just in time to see Skulker leave while Danny hovers in the air, looking like he’s about to blow a gasket. Kurama takes one look at the panicking ghost kid floating above him, notices the weird spirit energy around the kid, and immediately puts two and two together and realizes the kid is a ghost, and a really powerful one. Yusuke, who if you remember spent about a week as a ghost at the age of 14, is confused because I thought ghosts couldn’t be seen by living people? But these bystanders are clearly seeing this kid?
And then Yusuke senses that strange spirit energy he felt when he went by FentonWorks, and he’s like “You were the reason for the weird spirit signature!” at Danny, who panics and flies off because now he thinks these super powerful guys are working for the GiW, and he’d rather not spend the rest of his afterlife on an examination table.
So Danny flies off, hoping to lose Yusuke and his gang, but Yusuke I-used-to-fight-demons-who-could-move-at-the-speed-of-sound-for-fun Urameshi and Hiei have absolutely no problem keeping up with the panicking halfa, and they end up fighting. Yusuke and Hiei want answers, Danny is terrified of being caught by what are possibly government agents, and finally Kurama manages to trap the halfa with ghostly vines.
Unfortunately for Danny, these vines are phase-proof, meaning he can’t escape, and he’s already hurt and exhausted and he doesn’t know how much longer he can hold his ghost form.
Yusuke picks up on the ghost’s nervousness immediately, and again assumes that this ghost is the culprit for Amity’s sudden disappearance, demanding to know why he abducted an entire town.
Danny is confused, because what the hell are these people talking about? He never abducted the town? He’s not nearly that powerful?? Before he realizes that oh, these people are trying to figure out why the town disappeared for 24 hours because literally no one outside of Amity Park has any idea why.
So Danny starts to explain what really happened, when his time finally runs out and he detransforms.
Right in front of what he believes to be four government officials.
There are five different reactions.
Hiei goes still. He’s completely silent. This shouldn’t be possible. He wants to believe that this is all a trick, but he can hear that fifth heartbeat that wasn’t there ten seconds ago and he smells that fear scent that only humans have and glamour can only do so much.
Kurama has the calmest reaction. He leans back a little, eyes wide, and lets out a soft “oh”. Yes, this is a surprise to him, but then again, Kurama himself is a demon hiding as a human, with a human family, so he immediately sympathizes with Danny a bit.
Danny is panicking. He’s just revealed his biggest secret to four complete strangers, all of whom are absolutely powerful enough to take him out on their own, and he is terrified that they’ll turn him in to the government. He’s about five seconds from a full-blown panic attack.
Kuwabara freaks out. He’s trying to wrap his mind around this whole thing, because he is 100% sure this kid was a ghost, that he was dead, but now he’s not sensing much of anything and how the hell is this possible???? How can someone be a ghost and a human at the same time???? WHAT????? He’s pulling at his hair as he tries to put the logistics of it together, pacing back and forth.
Yusuke freezes. Suddenly he’s 14 again, floating as he watches his body get carted off as he tries to come to terms with the fact that he’s dead. Then he’s in the temple of the four saint beasts, fighting with everything he has as he watches the love of his life get attacked by monstrous zombies. Then kneeling next to Genkai’s broken and bleeding body, begging her not to go even as she draws her last breath because he couldn’t bear to lose the woman that he’s come to see as family, as the closest thing he’d ever have to a grandmother. Then he’s watching Toguro plunge his hand into Kuwabara’s heart, watching as his best freind gasps for breath because Yusuke wasn’t good enough, he wasn’t strong enough, and he just lost Genkai he can’t loose Kuwabara too-.
And when he looks down at this small, skinny teenager with deep shadows under his eyes and knuckles covered in scars from god-knows haw many fights, he sees himself as he was in the beginning: Just a kid who was thrust into the world of the supernatural without any warning, desperately trying to stay alive and protect the human world despite the fact that he’s only a teenager, and he shouldn’t have to be fighting for his life against these ancient and powerful demons because he’s a kid, dammit!
Yusuke kneels down to get to eye level with the kid. He can’t help the painful twinge in his chest when the kid looks up at him with wide, icy blue eyes, and quietly begs him not to tell anyone, because this kid can’t be much older than he was when he started out as a spirit detective and he sounds absolutely terrified, and Yusuke can’t help but wonder why he sounds so scared of people learning about the whole ghost thing.
“Listen, kid. We’re not going to hurt you. We were sent here to investigate something, and we were hoping you might know something. Can you tell us your name?”
“Danny. D-Danny Fenton.”
“Ok, cool. Don’t worry, none of here are going to tell anyone about... about whatever this is. We just want to know about something that happened here a week ago, and we were hoping you could give us some answers.”
Danny agrees, and Kurama frees him from the vines. After a couple of moments, Danny calms down as he realizes that no, these guys won’t rat him out to the government, and he agrees to answer some of their questions.
The group make their way to the outskirts of the forest, and Danny tells them about his status as a half-ghost: he tells them about his parents, how they were building a portal to the ghost zone (Everyone is more than a little freaked out at that, because now there’s a permanent portal to spirit world that Koenma doesn’t know about), how he’d gone inside to see if he could figure out why it wasn’t working, how it’d turned on while he was inside (Yusuke clenches his fists hard enough to draw blood. Both of the times he’d died had been excruciatingly painful, but at least they’d been quick. Getting electrocuted to death would be beyond agonizing, and getting caught in a portal like that...). He tells them about how his parents despise ghosts, believing them to be cruel, malicious, and emotionless, incapable of feeling pain. He tells them about how he’s TERRIFIED of telling his parents the truth, of telling them that he’s Danny Phantom because that seems to be the ghost they want to capture the most, and he’s seen what they do to the ghosts they capture (Kurama and Yusuke feel sick at that. No wonder the kid was so adamant about keeping this a secret.).
“Does anyone else know? Anyone at all?”
Yusuke breathes a small sigh of relief when Danny tells them that his sister and his two best friends know. That sigh of relief is rescinded when the kid tells them that oh yeah, all the ghosts that are constantly attacking the town? Yeah, they know my secret identity too.
Yusuke has to force himself to move on from that last tidbit because he’s about five seconds from adopting this kid despite being only five years older.
“Ok, neat. That’s... that’s ok. Moving on to why we’re here. We were hoping that you would have some information regarding the sudden disappearance and reappearance of Amity Park a week ago? Do you know why or how it happened?”
Danny talks about how, one week ago, ghosts started pouring out of the portal in unprecedented numbers. How they were terrified, running from something in the ghost zone. How Fright Knight had appeared, declaring the reign of Pariah Dark (Kurama and Hiei suck in a breath. Had... had this kid seriously fought against the fabled ghost king?), and the massive green dome had appeared over the town. How he’d tried to fight Fright Knight off, how another ghost by the name of Vlad Plasmius had shown up and admitted that he was the reason for Pariah Dark’s temporary freedom, how Plasmius had decided to have a temporary truce with Danny in order to defeat Pariah, how Danny had pulled Fright Knight’s sword from the ground and accidentally teleported Amity Park into the Ghost zone, how the entire town had gone under lock down. How he’d stolen the power suit from his parent’s lab to go and face Pariah on his own, and bring Amity back to Earth. How he’d just barely been able to shove Pariah back in the sarcophagus of Forever Sleep, how the power suit had almost completely drained his life energy, how the town had been back on earth when he’d woken up (Again, Yusuke has a flashback to the Temple of the Four Saint Beasts. What is it with the powers that be and sending kids to do life-threatening missions like that?).
Kurama records the entire thing before sending it to Koenma.
When Danny is finally done, he notices that everyone is staring at him. Yusuke is the first one to speak.
“Damn kid, you really fought the king of the Ghost Zone, huh?” Danny stutters for a moment, because this guy is saying it like Danny fought a god or something. Like yeah, it was difficult, but it can’t be that big a deal right?
Then Kurama speaks up. “Danny, I don’t think you understand. There are two ways to crown a king of the Ghost Zone: either the ghost zone itself must choose someone, or the current ghost king must be defeated in battle. You defeated Pariah Dark in battle. Meaning....”
Everyone goes silent for a moment, processing.
Then several things happen at once. Danny, who at this point still hasn’t fully processed that oh yeah, I defeated one of the most powerful ghosts in existence, freaks the hell out because I barely have time to protect one (1) town, how am I going to rule an entire dimension? Kuwabara is flipping his shit again, Hiei is contemplating, and Yusuke.... Yusuke decides screw it, I’m having an apprentice now, and after calming Danny down, he offers to help train him up a bit (Somewhere in spirit world, Genkai starts quietly laughing).
Danny agrees after a moment of deliberation. Yusuke hangs out in Amity for a bit to help Danny. His first interaction with Sam and Tucker is.... interesting. Yusuke snuck up on Sam and Tucker, and Sam promptly punched him in the face and almost broke his nose. But after a bit they start to warm up to him, and eventually Yusuke starts teaching Sam some hand to hand along with Danny.
Vlad makes one appearance while Yusuke is there. He sensed some sort of foreign presence in Amity and wanted to see if he could exploit it, only for Yusuke I-haven’t-slept-in-a-week-and-I-refuse-to-start-now Urameshi to wipe the floor with him. When he asks Danny who the new ghost is, he is surprised to learn that no, Danny is not the only half-ghost in existence, and also that guy is a famous millionaire and also knows my secret identity so maybe let’s not break into his mansion to fight him please? (Yusuke agrees not to after a very lengthy argument. Still, the whole situation reminds him a little too much of Toguro and the Dark tournament, and he quietly asks Koenma to open an investigation into this Vlad Plasmius guy.)
Yusuke’s introduction to Danny’s parents goes... surprisingly well, actually. Aside from one small incident where one of the Fenton ghost detectors lock on to Yusuke’s signature, everything goes fairly well. Jack and Maddie take a shine to him almost immediately, when they see him curb stomp Skulker with a practiced ease that only a professional should have, and within the week Yusuke is an honorary member of the Fenton family.
There’s a lot more, but this post is waaaay too long as it is. Feel free to add on!

Jack and Maddie were out visiting an old friend from university to work on some more ghost devices. They were on their way out when Sam and Tucker came to check up on Danny after he went to see Desiree (Phanniemay Day 6 Compromise), so luckily they couldn’t hear all the commotion that they made that night. Then again it was a very reasonable reaction to finding out that your friend has some sort of supernatural power. Tucker and Sam stayed over that night to help clean up the green goo and to find some more answers. They were reading some more files at the kitchen table. Tucker was eating toast, Sam was drinking some coffee and Danny had fallen asleep while reading a random page. *DING DONG* The sound of the doorbell echoed through the Fenton household. The sound was so loud that Danny bolted upright. The now barely awake Danny made his way to open the door. ‘WAIT!’ Sam shouted as she rushed to gather all the papers. ‘What is it?’ Danny asked confused. He was still in a bit of a half asleep mode and couldn’t think straight. ‘We have to make it seem like nothing’s out of the ordinary. If anyone sees these files they’ll want to find out why we are suddenly interested in all this ghost stuff.’ Sam replied. Danny was too tired to think for himself so it was easier for him to just comply. *KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK* Whoever was behind the door started getting impatient. ‘I’ll be right there!’ Danny shouted the door. When Sam and Tucker finally hid everything Danny opened the door. Two big intimidating men in white suits and sunglasses stood in front of him. ‘Ehm… can I help you?’ Danny asked. ‘ Good morning young man I’m Operative K and this is my associate Operative O. We are with GiW and it has come to our attention that some unusual activity has taken place in this household. We are here to asses the property.’ The men had a very serious expression. What Danny found strange was that the men didn’t even take a moment to look at Danny, they were looking behind them as if they were already scanning the house. Danny started to feel uneasy and began to slowly close the door a bit. ‘My parents aren’t home, so unless you have a warrant or something I can’t let you guys in.’ Danny said trying to sound as confident as he could. As soon as the men heard that they both turned their focus from the house towards Danny. ‘We work for a special branch within the U.S. Government…’ The other man said ‘… there is no need for us to use a warrant. If you do not let us in right now we have no choice but to arrest you for obstruction of justice.’ Danny didn’t know if what they were saying was true, but what he did know was that these men were armed and could easily overpower him. He decided that if he at least made it seem as if he complied they would let their guard down a bit. This could potentially give them a chance to escape from them if it came to that. Danny sighed and stepped aside gesturing to the men that they could come in. And so they did. When they reached the middle of the living room one of the men reached into his pocket. He pulled some strange device out of his pocket. It looked very similar to the technology his mom made for hunting ghosts. Why would the government have something that his mom made? Danny started to put the pieces together as he thought ‘But if it is the same device mom made, then that means-‘ *BEEP BEEP BEEP* Danny looked up to the sight of a red light from the device and a barrel of a strange looking gun. The man holding the device reached towards his earpiece and said. ’This is Operative O, threat located and ready for extraction.’ Danny felt his eyes well up while he thought. ‘Is this it? Is this how it has to end?’ As Operative O finished reported to his bosses the weapon started to power up. Danny could hear Sam and Tucker shouting ‘DANNY NO!!!’ As a sudden flash filled the room.

Random GIW!Danny.
Wow, over 385 notes! Thanks for liking my silly little thought. :) (I kind of thought it'd get, like, nine notes, so I hadn't put much effort into it, and almost didn't write it down at all).
Would you like to see a few snippets of Danny on the job? If so, keep reading (and scroll past the prev tags I've pasted in).
Here's my original tags:
#I donno how the GIW would be able to monitor search results but probably something to do with cookies#...I just thought it would be amusing if Danny has a repeat of his home life but with a whole government agency.#Like they're all about finding and capturing ghosts and Danny's just... there with them.#Oh and whenever Danny's team comes across a ghost? It's a little like a Wes moment but with the entire Ghost Zone.#The ghosts—who know who Danny is—are just incredulous about it. Danny's a foot away from the other agents and they just... don't Notice?#The GIW job is part joke; part for the money; part to keep up-to-date with what they're up to.#everyone who knows Danny thinks he's crazy to get that job.#...but well it's kind of fun
and here's some tags from @ghostly-shade:
#honestlly i kinda imagined this as being like a strategy so danny could work as a spy or something#like danny is just there to get info on the giw's plans. free the captured ghosts and mess with their tech if he's lucky#danny just slowing destroying the place from the inside while no one noticed he's doing anything#i think that would be fun
I did imagine Danny doing some of that type of stuff, just a bit more... unorganized and depending on his mood and the situation. No one's asking him to be a spy, and it's just weird and dangerous. And this version of Danny does a lot on a whim, and isn't going to be able to keep a high-stakes job if it's too serious.
---
Danny's dressed in a white suit and sunglasses and stands beside two other GIW agents—or I guess they're called 'operatives', oops. Before them, their ecto-guns aimed at him, is Vortex.
Vortex asks, pointing straight at Danny, Why, if Phantom is their top priority, they don't capture him instead.
Operative O says, "We're not falling for that old 'Phantom is behind you' trick again."
Operative D lowers his sunglasses a little, bright green eyes glowing as he gives Vortex a secretive little smile.
"He's literally... right beside you! You truly don't... see him?"
(A pretty typical ghost interaction while on the job. Although if it's a ghost Danny's friends with, like Frostbite or someone, they would act like Jazz. "Oh no, a government agent. Ahh!" and trust that Danny will let them go soon.)
---
Danny's at GIW headquarters, showing his co-workers a Fenton Thermos.
"See, you catch a ghost like this," he says, unscrewing the lid to demonstrate, "and then you leave the thermos here on this table—and the ghost will be completely gone in one to two business days."
"Oooo..." the other operatives say, staring at the thermos (and apparently disintegration device).
"But the technology and design are completely copyrighted, and if I find out anyone's tried to figure out how it works, I'll quit on the spot and take all my parents' tech with me."
An operative gasps. "Even the Fenton Portable Destablizer!?"
Danny nods. "Yes, even the Portable Por— ah, 'Destablizer'."
---
"How does Phantom keep breaking into our facilities?!" the director rants. He suddenly spins around, pointing a finger at Danny. "You!"
"I didn't do it!" Danny shouts, raising his hands high in the air.
"Operative D, guard our top secret files and plans tonight!" Then the director frowns. "...And put your hands down."
"O-oh. Right. Got it."
---
Danny, in civilian clothes, flops onto a couch with a sigh. He turns to look at Sam and Tucker.
He starts counting on his fingers as he says, "So, this week I've released Skulker, the Lunch Lady, and a few blob ghosts; made some copies of the GIW's newest plans and gave them to Frostbite to distribute; and I'll transfer Vortex over to Walker on Monday. Or maybe Tuesday. Oh! And I've managed to raise the priority level on Phantom by flying through the hallways with a full Nasty Burger dumpster and pouring trash on everyone I could find (including my on-the-clock duplicate)." He shares a quick high five with Tucker.
Sam just frowns at him, her arms crossed. "I still say you're crazy for taking this job."
Random Danny Phantom thought.
Danny and them are sitting around somewhere and Dani's there, and Tucker warns Dani to never search for ghost stuff online because the Guys In White monitor that type of thing. And Sam mentions how, a few years before Danny got his powers, she'd done a search for something about spirits and then had to prove to them that she wasn't a ghost or had ties to any ghosts.
And Danny's like, "Wait, they do what? Because every time I get frustrated with my powers, I start searching the web for help with them. ...Never find anything useful, though."
So everyone stares at Danny for a moment, and Tucker asks how he's not in a lab right now.
(A week earlier at GIW headquarters, an agent at a computer mentions to his co-worker that someone just searched for 'how to ghost' from a certain IP address. His co-worker says it'll be coming from Fenton Works. One of the Fenton's kids does that exact same search every so often. It sounds like they're following in their parents' footsteps and searching for how to hunt ghosts. The Fenton kids and Valerie Gray are both on a list for possible recruits.)
When Danny's eighteen (and still has his secret), a Guys In White agent approaches him, and Danny blurts out that no, he's not a ghost.
The agent says he didn't ask if he was...? And then goes on to invite Danny to join the GIW.
So then... Danny might end up deciding to join the GIW. With them never realizing they have a ghost working under them.

Random GIW!ThermosBoy.
(aka Random GIW!SeriousScene)
Operative 'D' stood before the reflective glass doors of the complex wearing a frown, his arms crossed. He sighed and walked inside, pulling at the bottom of his white suit jacket to make sure there weren't any wrinkles.
He might as well get it over with.
Inside, he walked through what resembled a metal detector. And it buzzed. Of course.
"Hold it right there!"
Dan— 'D'. He was still getting used to the codename. Operative D turned around to face the operative behind the desk.
"Oh, Operative D," the man sighed. He put his ecto-pistol down. "Let me see your eyes."
D lowered his sunglasses to reveal clear, sky-blue irises.
"Okay, you're good to go." He made an unconcerned shooing gesture and turned back to his computer.
D continued on as the other operative muttered about having thought they'd fixed that bug.
Operative D turned down the hallway on the right side of the lobby, and mentally counted the doors.
It should be the tenth door on the right.
A door on the left side opened and closed, drawing his attention.
"Valerie," he said with a smile, and she looked up. His grin widened as he looked at her face. "I like your hair."
Valerie furrowed her eyebrows. "It looks the same as it did three days ago. Though a bit frizzier." She released an amused huff of air and added, "You're not gonna start saying how much you hate flaming ponytails again, are you?"
He stared at her blankly. "What's wrong with flaming ponytails?"
She stared back at him for a long second. Then burst out laughing. "I have no idea!"
He gave a few chuckles in return.
Valerie's laughter faded to a smile and she brushed a finger across one eye, as though wiping away a tear. "Hmm," she said, eyes turning again toward Operative D and the door he was standing beside, "you're here to turn that ghost in there loose, aren't you?"
Operative D's eyes widened in surprise. He started to open his mouth to ask how she found out, but snapped it back shut.
"I know how the Thermos really works, you know. None of those ghosts have been disintegrated." She shook her head with a sigh, but her eyes were soft. "You always were too nice for your own good."
D snorted, muttering, "That's for sure."
"Hey... Danny? Would you like to go out for dinner with me sometime? If you're not with anyone?" She gave a quick glance down at his standard-issue black glove. "Maybe give us another chance?"
D scanned her hopeful face for a long moment. "...No, it wouldn't work out. There's too much history between me and you."
Her face fell. "Oh. I guess you're right." One corner of her mouth quirked upward. "I never should've let you go back then, huh?" She gave a little laugh. "Well, see you around."
She continued down the hallway, leaving D to wonder when she'd 'let him go'.
Pushing the strange conversation from his mind, he opened the nearby door and carefully closed it back behind him.
Inside, the room was lined with shelves of weapons and gadgets. It appeared to be a storage room. In the center of the room was a round table with a single Fenton Thermos sitting on top of it.
D reached for the thermos and picked it up.
He looked at the thermos in his hand for a several seconds, tracing the lines of the reflective metal with his eyes. And then uncapped it, aiming it above the table, and pressed the release button.
A brightly glowing Danny Phantom stared back at him.
"H... How?" Danny finally managed to get out.
Before him, the thermos in his hand... was himself. Messy black bangs, sunglasses, ...oddly unperturbed frown, and crisp white suit.
He'd been relatively sure he hadn't made a duplicate of himself—and, even if he remembered wrong, he couldn't feel the other him. There was no feeling of belonging, no stream of information passed between them.
So who...?
A smile slowly spread across the operative's face, and he reached up with his free hand to slide the sunglasses from his amused blue eyes.
His black hair slowly lengthened and gathered together in the back, blue eyes started shifting into red, black facial hair growing out, skin tingeing with green, hair lightening in color, muscle tone forming, his whole body starting to glow from within.
"Hello, Danny." His voice deepened through the syllables.
Danny sucked in a sharp breath even before the transformation completed.
He knew who this was.
White hair suddenly burst into flame with an audible 'woosh!', and the white-and-black suit shifted into a different configuration, and grew a cape.
Before him stood his evil future self.
Danny stretched out two subtly-shaking palms, ready to fire the strongest Ghost Ray he could at the first sign of attack.
The other Phantom, however, instead glanced down at the thermos still held in his hand, giving it a small absentminded tilt. His mouth formed an wry little half-smile as he lifted his eyes back to Danny. "It's amusing, isn't it?"
Danny's arms stopped shaking as his eyebrows lowered in deep concentration, trying to figure out what he meant.
"The thermos.—We've both been left to rot in one, now."
The other Phantom's free hand started glowing green, building up ectoplasmic power, his smile again widening into a large grin.
Danny hurried to charge up his own Ghost Ray.
The other Phantom suddenly frowned, snuffing out the green energy and using the same hand to reach into his collar and pull out one of Clockwork's time medallions.
It seemed to be pulsing.
The other Phantom frowned at it for a few seconds, then turned his eyes back to Danny.
"Next time."
And he vanished.
The Operative D storyline continues. Random GIW!Val.
When Jazz was eighteen, the GIW came by to see if she'd be interested in working with them. She turned them down immediately, and was a bit disturbed about them offering. She was worried about how much they might know, or learn about, but didn't mention the incident to Danny, since she didn't want to worry him. When Danny joined them two years later, and she heard about it, she paced back and forth in front of Danny as she gave an hour-long upset and panicked rant. (...Danny didn't get much out of it, just sat there bored and a bit confused.)
When the GIW came to Valerie (a few weeks after Danny), Valerie asked what she'd get out of it. She wasn't too impressed when they'd shown up at her door, and she kind of treated them like door-to-door salesmen. It took a lot for her to accept the job. She's one of the highest paid operatives there is. She has so many health benefits, days off, etc. They almost decided not to hire her because of her conditions, but then they saw her in action (*beep beep* "Ah, hang on a second." Valerie activates her suit and flies out her window. The two operatives stick their heads out the window to watch open-mouthed. Valerie comes back in through the door in her normal clothes, saying, "Sorry about that. So, what I was saying about vacation days..." The operatives glance at their belatedly-beeping ghost alert messages).
Her and Danny are their two young star operatives. Danny has his Fenton tech and some ghost knowledge, while Valerie is the best out in the field. But Danny... he's just an average agent besides the gadgets he brings in. Average rookie pay, etc. He'd never even considered negotiating for more. Him and Valerie are opposites. While Danny tends to be nervous and a little awkward, Valerie's like a rock.
Danny and Valerie were of course put in two completely different locations. No reason to have both of their valuable agents in one place.
---
Danny's walking down a white hallway with another operative.
"I've heard someone from the Wisconsin division's visiting for the next two weeks. Some bigshot sent out to inspect our methods and tech."
"O-oh?" Danny almost trips.
"It's nothing to worry about, Operative D. You've been here three years, you know how it is. Operative Red will just look around, give us a list of things to improve on."
"Operative Red? You mean 'R'?"
"No, Red is someone else. I've heard they're the only operative in history to be allowed a nonstandard codename and uniform."
Danny hears a voice as they near a door up ahead.
"Wait. You're tellin' me this thermos will disintegrate a ghost—but only if placed on this table?"
Danny speeds up, hurrying to push the door open.
A woman in white is twisted around examining the underside of a table, a skeptical frown on her face. "...But that's not how Thermoses wor—"
"Valerie!" Danny interrupts, slightly out of breath.
Valerie hits her head on the underside of the table and then straightens while spinning around, curls fanning out from a low ponytail.
She's wearing a Guys In White suit, but the tie and gloves are red instead of black.
"Danny?" she asks with wide, surprised eyes. "I... I never thought you would go into this field. I thought you had your heart set on being an astronaut."
Danny shrugs nervously, afraid of her learning too much. "Yeah, well. The pay's good."
Valerie smirks. "Yeah."
Danny takes a good look at her. "Wow. I haven't seen you since high school." Then comments, "You still have your hair."
Her eyebrows knit as she frowns. "...Why wouldn't I? Danny, you know the Guys In White don't require a certain haircut, right? You could even grow out a ponytail if you wanted."
"No!" Danny shouts in horror. Then stutters out, "I mean, uh, I like my hair as it is. I like it black."
"What?"
"Uh. Not floaty. Completely hair-like. Never on fire."
" ...What...?"
"Ma'am," the other operative whispers to her, "Operative D's just like that. He spouts nonsense when he gets flustered."
"He hasn't changed at all." She shakes her head with a fond smile.
(Meanwhile, Danny continues to babble while panicking about how to keep Valerie from discovering the lies about the Fenton tech, and trying to figure out what to do about his pranks as Phantom.)
---
A few days later, after a prank gone wrong...
In a small room lined with shelves of assorted gadgets, on a small table, a thermos shakes and bangs around.
"Ah... a little help here? Anyone? Hello?"
There's a moment of silence.
"...I knew I should've made a contingency plan for this."
